Backyard and Farm Wedding Restroom Checklist
A practical checklist for couples and planners hosting a wedding where the house bathroom cannot handle the guest list, from sizing to the morning-after pickup.

How many restrooms does a backyard wedding need?
A backyard wedding needs 1 restroom unit for every 50 guests for a reception of up to 4 hours, scaled up for longer receptions, plus 1 unit for every 100 guests when there is a bar. A 120-guest, 5-hour reception with a bar needs 5 units, or one 4-stall restroom trailer.
Math: 120 × 5 ÷ 200 = 3 base units. The bar adds 2 (120 ÷ 100 = 1.2, rounded up). Total: 5 units. Use the calculator for your numbers.
Should we choose deluxe units or a restroom trailer?
Choose deluxe flushing units when the site has no water or power or the ground slopes. Choose a restroom trailer when you have level ground, a garden hose and a standard outlet within about 100 feet, and you want lights, air conditioning and running water for guests in formal wear.
Compare deluxe flushing units and restroom trailers.
Where should wedding restrooms go?
Wedding restrooms should sit 50 to 150 feet from the reception, downwind of the food, on level ground the truck can reach. Face doors away from the dance floor and photo spots. Put a path light or string lights between the reception and the units for an evening event.
- Keep the trailer or units out of the background of ceremony photos.
- Leave a 5-foot clear area in front of each door.
- Put the accessible unit closest to the path.
- Add a hand wash station near the bar if you use standard units.
When should restrooms be delivered and picked up?
Restrooms for a Saturday wedding should be delivered Friday and picked up Monday, so the rehearsal is covered and no one waits on a truck the morning of the wedding. Book 4 to 8 weeks ahead for spring and fall Saturdays, and at least 7 days ahead for any trailer.
Send the rental company the venue address, a photo of the spot, the drive and gate width, and the name of the person who will meet the driver.
What should the wedding restroom checklist include?
The wedding restroom checklist covers six items: final guest count, reception length and bar, unit type, placement photo, power and water for a trailer, and a day-of contact. Confirm all six two weeks before the date, and recheck the weather forecast the week of the wedding.
- Guest count and reception hours
- Bar or no bar
- Deluxe units or trailer
- Spot photo, path and gate width
- Hose and 20-amp outlet within 100 feet (trailer)
- Day-of contact and phone number
