How many porta potties do I need for my event?
For an event, plan 1 standard porta potty for every 50 guests for up to 4 hours, then add units as the event gets longer: 100 guests need 2 units for 4 hours, 3 for 6 hours and 4 for 8 hours. Add 1 unit per 100 guests when alcohol is served.
- Base count: guests × hours ÷ 200, rounded up. Events shorter than 4 hours count as 4 hours. This equals 1 unit per 50 guests for 4 hours.
- Alcohol: add 1 unit for every 100 guests, rounded up.
- Handwashing: 1 two-sided hand wash station for every 4 toilets; at least 1 when food is served.
- Accessibility: at public events, 5 percent of units in each cluster must be accessible, and at least 1.
Worked example: 150 guests, 6 hours, beer and food.
150 × 6 ÷ 200 = 4.5, rounded up to 5 units. Alcohol: 150 ÷ 100 = 1.5, rounded up to 2 more. Total 7 standard units. Hand wash: 7 ÷ 4 = 1.75, rounded up to 2 stations. Public event: 7 × 5% = 0.35, so 1 ADA unit.

How many porta potties does a construction crew need?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1 sets the legal minimum for construction: 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers, 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers above that, and 1 of each per 50 workers at 200 or more. With weekly service, we recommend 1 standard unit for every 10 workers.
The legal minimum and our recommendation differ because one unit fills in about a week with 10 people using it daily. Source: OSHA 1926.51. More detail is on the construction rental page.
How many units do farm field crews need?
OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110 requires 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility for every 20 field workers when 11 or more employees do hand labor, placed within a quarter-mile walk. A crew of 35 needs 2 toilets and 2 handwashing facilities. Crews out 3 hours or less, including travel, are exempt.

When should I add more units than the chart says?
Add 1 more unit than the chart says when most guests arrive and leave at the same time, such as a ceremony break or a game halftime, when most guests are women or children, or when it is above 90 degrees and guests drink more water. Lines form at peak times, not on average.
Spread units into two clusters for sites larger than a football field so no one walks more than about 150 feet. Place the ADA unit closest to the main path.
Quick sizing answers
How many porta potties do I need for 100 guests?
100 guests need 2 standard units for up to 4 hours, 3 for 6 hours and 4 for 8 hours. Add 1 more when alcohol is served.
How many porta potties for 200 people?
200 people need 4 units for up to 4 hours, 6 for 6 hours and 8 for 8 hours, plus 2 when alcohol is served.
Do I need separate units for men and women?
Separate units are not required. Labeling half the units for women shortens lines at weddings and festivals because women's visits take longer.
Is one porta potty enough for 20 people?
One unit handles 20 guests easily for an event, and 20 or fewer construction workers under OSHA's minimum.
