How to Prepare Your Yard for Porta Potty Delivery

Most delivery problems come from the same few things: a narrow gate, soft ground, a locked fence or a spot the truck cannot reach. Ten minutes of prep avoids a second trip.

How much space does a porta potty need?

A standard porta potty needs a level spot about 4 feet by 4 feet, plus 3 feet in front of the door, and about 8 feet of overhead clearance. The path from the truck needs to be at least 48 inches wide. An accessible unit needs about 8 feet by 8 feet.

How close does the truck need to get?

The service truck needs to park within about 25 feet of the unit, because the pump hose has to reach it for every service. The truck is a pickup or flatbed, so it needs a firm path with no low limbs or wires under about 8 feet and room to stop without blocking the road.

If your spot is farther than 25 feet, place the unit beside the driveway instead. Moving a unit after placement can spill the tank.

What should I avoid when choosing the spot?

Avoid septic tanks, drain fields, sprinkler heads, buried gas or water lines, low spots that hold water, and slopes. Keep the unit at least 25 feet from food and seating at a party. Do not place it where vehicles back up, or under a tree that drops heavy limbs.

How do I mark the spot for the driver?

Mark the spot with a cone, stake, flag or ribbon, and write a short note in your order: which side of the house, landmarks, gate code and dogs. Send a photo if the spot is hard to describe. The driver calls about 30 minutes before arriving.

  1. Unlock the gate or share the code.
  2. Move cars, trailers and toys from the path.
  3. Put pets inside.
  4. Mark the spot.
  5. Keep your phone on for the driver's call.
