Hurricane Season and Porta Potties in the Wiregrass

Hurricane Michael's center passed within about 30 miles of Dothan in October 2018. Storms from the Gulf reach the Wiregrass every few years, and rented units need a plan.

What should I do with a rented porta potty before a hurricane?

Before a hurricane, call dispatch as soon as a watch is issued for your county. Units can be picked up early, laid down on their backs and strapped, or moved against a sheltered wall. A standing unit in open ground can be blown over and damaged by winds well below hurricane strength.

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Jobsites with several units should include them in the site's storm plan, alongside dumpsters and loose materials.

Can I get porta potties after a storm?

After a storm, units go first to cleanup crews, utility staging areas and homes without water or sewer service. Expect high demand for several days after a major storm. Calling as soon as roads are open, with a clear address or GPS pin, gets you on the earliest route.

See same-day and emergency delivery.

What should a jobsite storm plan say about restrooms?

A jobsite storm plan should list every rented unit, who calls dispatch when a watch is issued, and whether units are picked up or laid down and strapped. It should also name a spot away from trees and power lines where units can be reset after the storm, so crews have restrooms on day one of cleanup.

  1. Count and map every unit on site.
  2. Name the person who calls dispatch at the watch stage.
  3. Choose pickup or lay-down for each unit.
  4. Pick a safe reset spot for after the storm.
  5. Keep the dispatch number in the site binder.

How did Hurricane Michael affect the area?

Hurricane Michael made landfall at Mexico Beach, Florida on October 10, 2018 with 160 mph winds and passed within about 30 miles of downtown Dothan. In Marianna, more than 80 percent of homes and businesses were heavily damaged or destroyed, and power was out for about three weeks.

Long outages mean homes on wells lose water too. A porta potty and a hand wash station keep a household going until power returns. See our pages for Marianna and Jackson County, Florida.
